At Home with Marcus and Maya Samuelsson
Anthony Maxwell recently had an opportunity to visit with and photograph Marcus and Maya Samuelsson at the home of interior designer Brad Linard of Brad Linard Designs of New York.
Marcus
By way of Sweden, Marcus landed in New York City where he feels at home in the kitchen or immersed in the culture of the city. Marcus brings people together through food, spices, and cooking techniques.
For this picture, Marcus picked the wide brim wool fedora trimmed in pheasant feathers. It's a bold, colorful hat that speaks to his personality and cooking style. He loves color, and this hat reminded him of his African and Swedish backgrounds.
An accomplished chef, Marcus spends his time at Red Rooster in Harlem and numerous other restaurants. He has written several books, which illustrate his journey as an entrepreneur. He can also be found on the screen with his PBS show “No Passport Required” where he visits numerous cities and explores foods and cultures.
Marcus chose the canvas bucket hat for this picture. It speaks to his corky fun side. It goes perfectly with the sneakers he often sports on set for his cooking shows. He customized the black canvas hat with a bright pink ribbon covered in green polka dots I found in Japan.
Maya
With common roots, Marcus and Maya share a passion for Ethiopia. They were both born there but didn’t meet until fate brought them together in Harlem over a decade ago. They are truly a match made in heaven and their adoration and respect for each other shows.
Maya picked our wide brim beach hats. When she put them on, they took on a new narrative. They became couture hats because she embodies so much elegance with her bold elegant African features. Both hats took on a very earthly sexiness that is very much Maya...a raw beauty.
She is a model, mother, wife. spending much of her time on charity endeavors, such as http://threegoats.org/ which she co-founded with Marcus. The mission of the organization is to improve the health and wellbeing of the Ethiopian people, and they are continually forging ahead with projects to meet this goal.
One Love
The epitome of grace and style, Marcus and Maya Samuelsson, along with their son Zion, live life to the fullest. This amazing trio makes their home in Harlem, bringing unique touches of their heritage to their life and work.
Both Marcus and Maya have a style all their own. Together they are a force to be reckoned with. Whether they are spending time on the town, or relaxing at home, this beautiful couple make every moment count.
